Soothing an aching back (1)
As I think I mentioned in the "About" section of this blog, one of the things that brought me to yoga was back pain. Although yoga has worked wonders over the years for me, it is not a miracle cure. When you have a 30º curve in your lumbar spine, a 21º curve in your thoracic spine, and sit at a computer for hours on end, no amount of yoga and ergonomics will be enough to banish back pain forever.
I have been practising yoga regularly, and using my stepper for cardiovascular exercise at least 3 times a week since the lockdown started, but I'm still suffering from back pain. A physiotherapist once said to me, years ago, that the best thing I could do for my back was to walk. I did not think much of her advice at the time, as I failed to see how walking could help relieve back pain, but now her words come to mind. However, walking is not an option during lockdown, so I thought I'd share some exercises to relieve back pain. There are plenty of asanas and sequences you can do to help mobilise, stretch and strengthen your back, so this is the first post in a series.
